The Sandy the Safety Bee Series was created by Jill Metcalfe, Ed.D., a former K-12 educator with a deep commitment to keeping kids safe. With years of experience in school transportation, Dr. Metcalfe recognized a need for engaging resources to teach children about bus safety. Inspired by this need, she wrote her first book, introducing Sandy the Safety Bee and Jonah, a young bear learning to overcome his fears and make safe choices.

As the series grew, Dr. Metcalfe expanded the safety lessons to include new characters and scenarios, but Jonah’s journey in the first book laid the foundation for teaching children the importance of bravery and safety. With Miss Sandy’s gentle guidance, Jonah learns how to face his fears, and through his story, children are introduced to safety concepts in a relatable and memorable way.

The Sandy the Safety Bee Series is comprised of five books, each one focused on helping kids build confidence and make safe decisions in their everyday lives. The books contain colorful illustrations, rhyming stories, and numerous teachable moments.  These books provide the foundation for important conversations with kids about safety and good decisions. We believe that safety education should be fun, warm, and meaningful—something children will remember and carry with them as they grow.
